James (Joe) Gholson, MD
Orthopedics and Orthopedic Surgery
About
James Gholson, MD, is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in personalized and minimally invasive partial knee replacement, anterior approach hip replacement and total knee replacement. He tailors each patient's surgical plan and treatment regimen to speed recovery and support a faster return to work and daily life.
In the clinic, Dr. Gholson partners with his patients to understand how arthritis affects their daily lives. He helps them map out a path back to the activities they enjoy - whether that's pain-free playtime with their grandchildren or getting back to a favorite sport. "It's important to define treatment goals early in our relationship so we're always focused on what matters most to the patient," he says.
Dr. Gholson came to El Camino Health to join a joint replacement center focused on patient-centered care. He has completed thousands of joint replacement surgeries in the South Bay community. He uses the latest orthopedic technology - including robotics and artificial intelligence - to improve hip and knee replacement outcomes and enhance his patient-centered approach to care.
Dr. Gholson graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Medical School. He has contributed to numerous orthopedic publications, national presentations and textbooks and is a reviewer for The Journal of Arthroplasty. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons.
Outside of work, Dr. Gholson enjoys running, snowboarding, hiking and spending time with his wife and three children.

Matthew Miller, MD
Orthopedics and Orthopedic Surgery
About
Matt Miller, MD, is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon who specializes in arthritis and joint replacement. He performs minimally invasive hip and knee replacements (arthroplasties) and complex revision surgeries to help patients regain mobility and quality of life. Passionate about innovation, he uses advanced robotic, computer-assisted and mixed-reality technologies to improve precision and outcomes.
"Many people know they need joint replacement but are nervous about pain, recovery or age limitations," he says. "We've developed less invasive techniques and advanced pain management strategies to make recovery faster and easier. I'm here to help patients feel confident about their care."
Before joining El Camino Health, Dr. Miller spent 15 years as an associate professor of orthopedic surgery and attending surgeon at Stanford University. He's inspired by El Camino Health's exceptional surgical team, technology and commitment to patient-centered care. "Our institution supports new ideas and advancements in joint replacement that allow us to deliver the best outcomes," he says.
Dr. Miller stays at the forefront of orthopedic care. He helped pioneer a smartphone app that keeps patients engaged throughout their joint replacement journey. It helps them prepare for surgery, track recovery and communicate with their care team. Dr. Miller tested the app through a multiphase clinical trial and now uses it as a valuable tool for patient education and rehabilitation.
His research interests include preventing prosthetic joint infections and optimizing the safety of outpatient joint replacement procedures. He's also studying the most effective arthroplasty techniques for patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
As an expert in robotic-assisted joint replacement, Dr. Miller consults and trains other surgeons. He works with peers in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) to showcase the technology's features and benefits. His work has appeared in several peer-reviewed journals, including JAMA Surgery, the Journal of Arthroplasty, and the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. He has also contributed research about hip bone tissue death (osteonecrosis) to the AAOS patient education website.
Dr. Miller is a fellow of AAOS and AAHKS. He is also a member of the Western Orthopaedic Association and the California Orthopaedic Association. He has received recognition from Becker's Hospital Review as one of 65 orthopedic surgeons recommended by peers nationwide.
Outside the operating room, Dr. Miller enjoys spending time with his wife and three children. He stays active skiing, biking, wake surfing and caring for their many pets.
