About

Scott Russell received his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in 2002. He completed his pediatric residency (2005) and pediatric emergency medicine fellowship (2008) at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. He began his career at the Medical University of South Carolina in 2008 as an assistant professor of Pediatrics. He served as the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Medical Director from 2011 until 2018 and has been the Division Chief of Emergency Medicine since 2016. He currently serves as an Associate CMO, Children's Health, the Vice Chair, Clinical Operations, Department of Pediatrics and the Senior Medical Director of Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital. He is the proud parent of a 13-year-old daughter who continues her quest to be a professional cheerleader despite his objections and a sports-crazed 10-year-old son. His ultimate goal is to partner with the leaders of MUSC Health to create a comprehensive health care network for the children of South Carolina.

Dr. Matthew M. Moake is an assistant professor of pediatric emergency medicine who specializes in the care of acutely ill and injured children. He completed his medical school, graduate school, and pediatric residency at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. He subsequently completed fellowships in Pediatric Emergency Medicine and Emergency Ultrasound at the Medical University of South Carolina where he stayed on as faculty. Dr. Moake serves as the director of emergency ultrasound within the pediatric emergency department. His clinical interests include point-of-care ultrasound, procedural sedation, medical education, and quality improvement. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his children, playing volleyball, relaxing at the beach, building furniture, brewing beer, and sampling the always-changing Charleston restaurant scene.

M. Olivia Titus, MD, FAAP, FACEP is a Professor of Pediatrics and Fellowship Director for Pediatric Emergency Medicine. She grew up in Alexandria, Virginia. She made her way to MUSC for medical school then back after residency and fellowship at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital. Upon returning to MUSC for faculty, she started the fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine and still leads this program. In addition, she has served as Vice Chair for all the fellowships in the Department of Pediatrics since 2012.

Dr. Lehman-Huskamp currently serves as the chair for the American College of Emergency Physician's (ACEP) Disaster section. She is the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) South Carolina chapter disaster liaison and serves on national disaster response committees for both ACEP and AAP.

Jennifer Braden, M.D. is an assistant professor of pediatrics and a physician in the pediatric emergency department at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital. She graduated from the University of Cincinnati's College of Medicine before moving to Charleston to complete her residency in pediatrics at MUSC. After spending a year in pediatric private practice, Dr. Braden returned to the emergency room as a nocturnist where she enjoys providing care to both well and acutely sick and injured children. She is the scheduling wizard for the emergency room and three after-hours clinic sites. In her free time, Jennifer enjoys spending time with her twins Jack and Sam, relaxing at the beach, traveling, Ohio State football, and all things Disney!

Smith** is a pediatric emergency medicine physician and the new Emergency Medicine Research Director at SJCH, bringing over two decades of clinical and academic excellence to her role. She earned her medical degree from the **Wake Forest School of Medicine**, completed her pediatric residency at **Duke University**, and pursued fellowship training in pediatric emergency medicine at **Washington University in St. Louis**. Before joining MUSC and SJCH, Dr. Smith served as the **Emergency Department Research Director** at the **University of Connecticut and Connecticut Children's Medical Center**, where she built a robust research infrastructure and mentored a generation of emerging clinician-scientists. Her leadership helped expand the department's research productivity, foster collaborations across disciplines that have directly influenced pediatric emergency care practices. Dr. Smith's primary areas of interest include **asthma**, **injury prevention**, and **training young investigators**. Her work has emphasized improving outcomes for children with acute asthma exacerbations through innovative treatment protocols and community-based interventions. She has also led national initiatives focused on reducing preventable childhood injuries, integrating public health approaches with emergency care research. Recognized for her commitment to mentorship and advancing pediatric emergency medicine, Dr. Smith has received multiple awards for excellence in teaching and research leadership. She is known for her ability to translate complex research findings into practical, patient-centered improvements in care. As she transitions to her new role, Dr. Smith remains dedicated to fostering a culture of inquiry, collaboration, and innovation-ensuring that future generations of physicians are equipped to improve the health and safety of children everywhere.

Christopher Pruitt, M.D. is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at MUSC and Medical Director of the Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital Emergency Department. He attended medical school at MUSC, where he also completed residency in Pediatrics. He completed a Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship at UAB, where he then served as faculty prior to returning to Charleston. Dr. Pruitt is active in pediatric research, with a special interest in the evaluation and management of the febrile infant. He is active in the Section on Emergency Medicine of the American Academy of Pediatrics, where he serves on the Steering Committee for the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Collaborative Research Committee (PEMCRC). He is co-chair of Protocol Review and Surveys for the PEMCRC. He is also president of the Southern Society for Pediatric Research (SSPR). He is also immediate Past-President of the Southern Society for Pediatric Research (SSPR).

Dr. Carrie Busch is an assistant professor in Pediatric Emergency Medicine and Child Abuse Pediatrics. She received her M.D. from Texas A\&M, completed her residency in general pediatrics at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and remained at MUSC to complete a dual Pediatric Emergency Medicine and Child Abuse Pediatrics Fellowship. She was the first fellow in the nation to complete both of these trainings in a combined setting. During her fellowship she also completed a Masters in Clinical Research and her current interests include quality improvement and trauma. Dr. Busch holds board certifications in General Pediatrics, Child Abuse Pediatrics, and Pediatric Emergency Medicine. She serves as the quality improvement (QI) coordinator for the MUSC Pediatric Emergency Department and as the Director for the Pediatric Sexual Assualt Program.

Gregory Hall, MD, MHA, FACEP, is an emergency physician who has been caring for patients in both the adult and pediatric emergency departments at MUSC for the last decade. He went to medical school in Cincinnati and trained at the oldest emergency medicine training program- Cincinnati's University Hospital. Dr. Hall takes pride in training the next generation of emergency physicians as well as providing compassionate care in our EDs.

She moved to Charleston in 2018 where she works in the Pediatric Afterhours and Pediatric Emergency Department. When she is not working, she enjoys traveling the world with her husband.

**Sonam Rama, PA** is a board-certified Physician Assistant who joined the Ear, Nose \& Throat Department, Division of Head and Neck Oncology Surgery in April 2022. Sonam grew up in the small town of Monroe, Georgia. She graduated Cum Laude from Kennesaw State University with a degree in Exercise Science and a minor in Biology. She then earned her Master's of Medical Science in Physician Assistant Studies at Charleston Southern University where she was elected to serve as the Diversity and Philanthropy Chair for the Student Leadership Association. Sonam was first attracted to the ENT specialty when she shadowed an ENT PA during undergrad. She loved the relationships she was able to form with the patients and enjoyed being able to perform procedures. During her training at Charleston Southern, she rotated through multiple surgical specialties and felt the most fulfilled working with patients who have oncological needs.

Dr. Borg grew up in Irmo, SC. He completed his undergraduate degree at Macalester College in St. Paul Minnesota. After a brief foray into competitive kayaking, entered the MD/PhD program at MUSC from which he graduated in 2000 with a PhD in Microbiology and Immunology as well as his Medical Degree. He continued residency training at the University of Cincinnati in Emergency Medicine. He worked at Emory University and Grady Hospital in Atlanta before returning to MUSC in 2006. He has served as EM research director, Division Chief of PEM, Interim Division Chief of Child Abuse Pediatrics and is now a Professor of Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine. He also works in a rural Emergency Department in Wyoming every month. He has a diverse set of interests including traumatic brain injury, medical legal consultation, standup paddleboarding and grilling of wild game.

Before joining the faculty at MUSC he was an attending physician at Children's Colorado in Denver. Dr. Kane is the associate PEM fellowship director and the division coordinator for medical student and resident education. He has lectured nationally at ACEP and was a co-director of the pediatric simulation course at ACEP in 2019. In his free time he enjoys short walks on the beach, candlelit dinners with screaming children, and building sturdy furniture in his garage.

Dr. Jackson serves as the PEM director of procedural sedation and the institutional principal investigator for the multi-center Pediatric Sedation Research Consortium. He has served on the Society for Pediatric Sedation Board of Directors and on procedural sedation committees for the American College of Emergency Physicians. He co-edited The Pediatric Procedural Sedation Handbook, which was published in 2018, and lectures locally and nationally on procedural sedation of children in emergency department settings.
