MUSC Health Primary Care inside the Citadel Mall is open for in-person office visits, as determined by your provider. We are taking extra precautions to ensure your safety in our practice, including adhering to strict cleaning and social distancing guidelines. Please call 843-985-5500 to schedule your visit. You will be scheduled for a video visit; however, your provider may recommend an in-person office visit. MUSC Health Primary Care has opened a new clinic at the MUSC Health West Ashley Medical Pavilion, inside the Citadel Mall! This one convenient setting within the Epic Center (formerly the Citadel Mall) houses specialty care clinics and Primary Care. On-site lab and pharmacy services are available for patients' use. Ample, free parking is also available. Providers are accepting new patients at MUSC Health Primary Care - Epic Center to guide you through your wellness journey. We offer routine wellness and preventive care services, chronic disease management, and diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of conditions for patients of all ages.

Taylor Ray MacDonald, D.O.

Dr. Taylor MacDonald is a primary care sports medicine physician specializing in family and non-operative sports medicine. Dr. MacDonald earned his undergraduate degree from Virginia Tech, where he was involved with the sports medicine department of the Virginia Tech football team. He went on to complete medical school at VCOM in Blacksburg, VA. Then, he came to Charleston to complete his Family Medicine Residency at the Medical University of South Carolina. After residency, Dr. MacDonald went on to complete a Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at the American Sports Medicine Institute with Andrews Sports Medicine in Birmingham, AL. During his fellowship, he was the team physician for Jacksonville State University, Birmingham-Southern College, the Birmingham Barons minor league baseball team and Leeds High School. Dr. MacDonald has a special interest in sports medicine, sports-related concussions and musculoskeletal ultrasound. He is trained in ultrasound-guided procedures, including joint injections, soft tissue/bursa injections, regenerative medicine procedures such as platelet-rich plasma injections and other biologics.

Vanessa Diaz, M.D. MSCR, received her medical degree from the University of Miami (Florida) and completed residency in Savannah, Georgia. She joined our research division as a faculty member in 2004 after completing a two-year faculty development fellowship at MUSC that included obtaining her Master's of Science in Clinical Research. She is medical director for care coordination for primary care. Her research interests include Latino health, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and women's health issues. A native of Panama, Dr. Diaz is fluent in Spanish.

Dr. Nicholas Shungu is a family medicine physician at MUSC Health who strives to provide compassionate and high quality care to patients of all ages and backgrounds. His clinical interests include chronic disease management, self-care, care for underserved populations, and medical student education. He provides office-based procedures including trigger point injections, joint injections, long-term contraception, and treatment of warts and calluses. He has a special interest in care for adolescents and individuals with HIV. Dr. Shungu attended Duke University for college and received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He completed his residency in family medicine at Thomas Jefferson University, where he also served as chief resident. He practiced in Philadelphia and Chapel Hill before relocating to Charleston. While practicing in North Carolina, he was recognized with the UNC Health Care and UNC Faculty Physicians Award for Carolina Care Excellence. He has also been the recipient of the Thomas Jefferson University Department of Family Medicine Faculty Teaching Award. Dr. Shungu is committed to addressing healthcare disparities through patient care, teaching, and research. He loves to learn from and grow with his patients. His favorite part of practicing medicine are the relationships he is able to establish with a diverse group of people. He is proudly Safe Zone trained.
