MUSC Health Primary Care located at the West Ashley Medical Pavilion on Charlie Hall Boulevard is open for in-person office visits and online, video visits. Our Family Medicine providers offer comprehensive health care for patients of all ages. Your provider will see you for routine wellness and preventive care appointments; can guide you through diagnosis and treatment planning for a range of diseases and conditions; and will serve as a liaison between any other health care providers and specialists you may see.

Joseana Lopes Ferreira, M.D.

Dr. Joseana Lopes Ferreira is a board-certified family medicine physician with a diverse background in clinical care, research, and public health. She completed her medical residency in family medicine at the University of South Carolina's Prisma Health Midlands Foundation, following her medical degree from Potiguar University in Brazil. Dr. Ferreira also holds dual pharmacy degrees, bringing a broad pharmacological perspective to her patient care. With a comprehensive background in emergency medicine, primary care, and clinical research, Dr. Ferreira's clinical interests focus on chronic disease management, preventive medicine, and compassionate primary care for underserved populations. She has conducted research and presented internationally, including at the Wavefront \& Presbyopic Congress in Denver, CO. She is a member of several professional associations, including the American Academy of Family Physicians and the South Carolina Medical Association. Dr. Ferreira speaks English, Spanish, and Portuguese fluently, enabling her to serve a diverse patient community. She is committed to delivering empathetic, evidence-based care at MUSC Health Primary Care, ensuring her patients feel supported in all aspects of their health journey.

Michael William Kalsman, M.D.

Dr. Kalsman was born and raised in Southern Arizona. He trained at the University of Arizona with graduate degrees in pharmacy and medicine. He completed his residency in Family Medicine at the University of Utah in 1998. After finishing a fellowship in rural medicine, he has spent most of his career practicing and teaching family medicine in rural Western New York. He has earned awards at the state level for his care of underserved populations. His practice has truly been a picture of family medicine by providing services from advanced maternity care to home visits. He has held faculty positions with both the University of Utah and the University of Buffalo. He is fellowship trained and board certified in integrative medicine, which focuses on combining evidence based natural healing methods with contemporary medicine. He completed medical acupuncture training through Harvard in 2017. Dr Kalsman's focus is on the healing relationship he develops with patients. His interests include integrative family medicine, preventive medicine, and medical acupuncture.

Laura Lybarger, DNP, FNP-C, is a family nurse practitioner certified through the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. She graduated in 2004 from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing and went on to earn her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Waynesburg University in 2006. As a registered nurse, she spent the majority of her career working in the intensive care setting. In 2012, she earned her Master of Science in Nursing from Duquesne University while working in family medicine and palliative care. Laura relocated from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Charleston, South Carolina, in 2017, where she initially worked in internal medicine and the adult sickle cell clinic. She currently practices in a primary care setting. She earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice from the Medical University of South Carolina in 2020. She remains actively involved with the School of Nursing as an adjunct clinical faculty member and continues to precept nurse practitioner students. Her areas of interest include wellness and prevention, as well as the management of acute and chronic medical conditions. She provides care for patients across the lifespan, beginning at age 16 through geriatrics.
