Benjamin Kalivas, MD, is an assistant professor dual appointed in the Departments of Medicine and Psychiatry. Clinically he works as an academic hospitalist and brain stimulation psychiatrist. Dr. Kalivas completed his residency and is board certified in Internal Medicine and Psychiatry. After completing his residency, he served as Chief Resident for the Department of Medicine before joining the faculty at MUSC. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Kalivas has served as the program director for the Combined Internal Medicine and Psychiatry residency program. He is active in resident and student education and is a core faculty member in both departments. Dr. Kalivas also serves as the Medical Director of Graduate Medical Education (GME) Quality and Safety, where he facilitates the implementation of quality improvement and a culture of safety for over 800 residents and fellows working at MUSC. Dr. Kalivas actively researches delirium, a dangerous neuropsychiatric syndrome associated with acute medical illness. He works at implementing best practices and studying how delirium impacts hospitalized patients.

Dr. Nelson is an experienced anesthesiologist and clinical educator with fellowship training in regional anesthesia and palliative care. Dr Nelson attended the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She completed her anesthesia residency and regional fellowship training at Brigham and Women's Hospital. In her early career, she focused on regional anesthesia and global health. After 10 years in Boston, she moved with her family to Charleston to work as a clinician-educator at the Ralph H Johnson VA Medical Center and expand access to regional anesthesia for veterans. As she cared for more patients with cancer in the operating room, her interest in cancer pain management grew, which led her to a palliative care fellowship at MUSC. She currently splits her time between anesthesiology at the VA and palliative care at MUSC. Her interests include cancer pain management, palliative care in the perioperative setting and teaching palliative care communication techniques. She is committed to advancing medical education, multi-disciplinary collaboration, a patient-centered approach to care, and fostering compassionate care. Outside of work, she enjoys time with her husband and children, live music, running, cycling and exploring nature.

Dr. Rahoul Ahuja is a general internal medicine physician at MUSC and the Charleston VA Medical Center. Born and raised in South Carolina, he received his undergraduate education at the University of South Carolina Honors College (focusing on economics and global health), followed by medical school at MUSC, and internal medicine residency training at Emory University.He has previously worked with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO) on issues ranging from tobacco control, heart disease prevention, and mobile health technologies. He has particular interests in the global burden of chronic disease, where he has published in journals such as Preventing Chronic Disease, as well as PLOS Medicine. During his medical training, he practiced and worked with clinicians on the Navajo Indian Reservation in Tuba City, Arizona, as well as Muhimbili National Hospital at the National Cardiac Institute in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and in rural Costa Rica and Argentina. His clinical interests lie primarily in the prevention of chronic diseases through an integrated primary care approach, hypertension screening and treatment, diabetes screening, and telemedicine. He hopes to further explore how improved access to primary healthcare services can reduce rates of chronic diseases.

Dr. Patrick J. Cawley is the Chief Executive Officer of MUSC Health and Executive Vice President for Health Affairs of the Medical University of South Carolina. In this role, he oversees all clinical matters as they relate to MUSC. During his leadership, MUSC has significantly expanded its clinical enterprise with a new Children's Hospital, a regional health network, multiple ambulatory sites, development of additional clinical affiliates, and numerous novel joint ventures. Additionally, MUSC has become a national leader in telehealth and has continued as South Carolina's #1 hospital/health system per US News and World Report. Under Dr. Cawley's leadership, MUSC continues to receive numerous quality awards across all six domains of quality. Previously, he served as the chief medical officer of MUSC Medical Center. In that role he was responsible for the quality and safety of all patient care programs as well as direct oversight of clinical service lines. He has led MUSC's improvement transformation in quality and patient safety, which was recognized by the University Healthsystem Consortium in 2007 and again in 2012 by awarding the coveted Rising Star honor to MUSC. Dr. Cawley is a certified physician executive through the American College of Physician Executives and a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. He is a Fellow in the Liberty Fellowship Program and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network. He has been named one of America's Best Doctors®. He has also been awarded the Master of Hospital Medicine from the Society of Hospital Medicine. Dr. Cawley is a Past-President of the Society of Hospital Medicine. He is actively involved in leadership roles in the American Hospital Association, the South Carolina Hospital Association, America's Essential Hospitals, Vizient, and the health care collaborative, Initiant. Dr. Cawley graduated from the University of Scranton. He earned his medical degree from Georgetown University before completing an internal medicine residency at Duke University. Dr. Daniel Holena is a trauma and emergency general surgeon who treats patients with life-threatening injuries and urgent surgical conditions. He specializes in caring for people after car crashes, falls, gunshot wounds, or serious infections that require emergency surgery. Dr. Holena trained at some of the country's busiest academic medical centers, where he gained extensive experience managing critically ill patients. He completed his general surgery residency at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and a trauma and surgical critical care fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Blackwelder completed undergraduate education at Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC, a Master of Divinity at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Ga, and is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA). Brigid Sullivan, MD is an Assistant Professor of Medicine specializing in Palliative Care at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). She earned her undergraduate degree in Mathematics from the University of Notre Dame before serving in the United States Air Force as a controller on the AWACS aircraft. After completing her military service, Dr. Sullivan attended medical school at MUSC, graduating in 2008, and went on to complete her Family Medicine residency at MUSC in 2011. Following residency, she worked as a hospitalist at several local health systems and held leadership positions, including Chair of the Department of Medicine and Chair of the Credentials Committee at East Cooper Medical Center. She later returned to MUSC to complete a fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine and has since joined the adult inpatient palliative care team, where she provides consultative care to hospitalized patients with serious illnesses. Dr. Sullivan's clinical interests include improving access to palliative care for patients with chronic kidney disease, particularly those on dialysis. She is also interested in the integration of artificial intelligence into palliative care to help identify patients who would benefit from early intervention and to expand the reach of palliative services. Additionally, she is exploring models of inpatient hospice care-both within hospitals and in the community-with a focus on enhancing the experience of patients and their families. Outside of medicine, Dr. Sullivan is the proud mother of six children and is married to a local physician. She is passionate about running, weightlifting, and triathlon, and recently completed an Ironman race. She loves being outdoors, especially with her children, and enjoys hiking with her family, spending time at the beach, and boating with her kids.
