Lung cancer is the third most common cancer and the primary cause of cancer-related deaths in men and women in the United States. That's why the MUSC Health Lung Cancer Screening Program, in partnership with MUSC Hollings Cancer Center, offers lung screening to determine if you're at risk and, if so, help increase your chance of survival through early detection. Who should be screened for lung cancer? You should consider getting screened for lung cancer if you have all three of these risk factors: • 50 to 77 years old and • Have a 20 pack-year history of smoking (this means one pack a day for 20 years, two packs a day for ten years, etc.) and • Are a current smoker or have quit within the last 15 years. Not everyone who meets the initial criteria will be eligible for screening. Our team will work with each patient to weigh the risks and benefits of screening and help determine if screening is right for each individual patient.

About

A native of Lancaster, Alex decided to put her education and energy back into her hometown and the surrounding communities. She graduated from Buford High School in 2011 and then went on to fulfill her dreams as a nurse at the University of South Carolina - Lancaster. In 2015, she graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. She completed her precepting hours in the Intensive Care Unit at MUSC Health Lancaster Medical Center. This is when she knew that she had found her home. She was an ICU nurse in that unit for the next five and a half years while she returned to graduate school to become a Nurse Practitioner. She graduated with her Master's in Nursing from the University of South Carolina in December 2018. GO COCKS! Since then, she has completed many hours of preceptorship with surrounding physicians. Her love for her hometown drives her initiative to care for the people who reside here, and she hopes to do so until she retires. In her spare time, she likes to spend time with her family. Her husband is a firefighter, so with their busy schedules, they want to spend as much time with their little girl as possible. She is very excited and blessed to be able to serve this community!
