Dr. Ioannis Karampelas immigrated to the U.S. from Europe years ago and is certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. He is thankful for his mentors, who have profoundly shaped his professional and human nature. Dr. Karampelas is excited to give back to the people and to the community. In addition to general neurosurgery, he has a particular interest in brain and spinal cord tumors. Dr. Karampelas' approach is straightforward, saying, "I know how complex and frightening any neurological disease can be. I am here to help you understand what is going on in your body. Together, we can reach the best decision for you. I will share my professional opinion and what I believe is the best course of action after getting to know you as a person. My main focus is you, and I am proud to take full responsibility for you and your medical treatment." Dr. Curtis Worthington is board certified in Neurological Surgery and has been in Neurosurgical practice for over 30 years. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. Dr. Worthington has special interest in degenerative spine disease and in Neuro-oncology (brain tumors). His experience in the field of Stereotactic Radiosurgery is certainly the most extensive in the state of South Carolina. He was a founding member of the International Stereotactic Radiosurgery Society. He has received various awards and citations and has many peer-reviewed publications to his name. Past academic appointments have included Clinical Associate Professor of Neurosurgery and Radiation Oncology at the Medical University of South Carolina. He has lectured around the world including in India and South Africa and in 2024 will serve in a mission hospital in Kenya.

Susannah is a board-certified Physician Assistant, belonging to professional organizations such as the American Academy of Physician Assistants and the South Carolina Academy of Physician Assistants. Dr. Tripp Nanney is a board-certified neurosurgeon. He was born and raised in the Carolinas and still has deep ties to the area. He studied medicine at the University of North Carolina, and traveled to Northwestern University in Chicago to specialize in both spine and brain surgery. Dr. Nanney then practiced in Colorado for seven years and now is happy to return home to be of service to his community. He is fluent in Spanish, learned during his travels, to further increase the number of patients he can care for. Dr. Nanney has received awards from nursing staff for compassionate patient care and hopes to continue his holistic approach in caring for neurosurgery patients and families. He is comfortable seeing patients with all neurosurgical disorders of the brain and spine with special interest in brain tumors, aneurysms and vascular malformations, pituitary tumors, neuro-oncology as well as minimally invasive spine, complex spine and deformity surgeries, and spine tumors. He is also interested in surgical technology and advancing Florence's spine and brain navigation systems and emerging robotic technologies for use in the operating room.

Pedro Norat, M.D. is a general and vascular neurosurgeon at MUSC Health Florence Medical Center, where he serves as the Director of the Stroke and Thrombectomy Program. His medical journey began in Brazil, where he attended medical school and completed his neurosurgery residency in 2017 at the renowned Paulo Niemeyer State Brain Institute. He then moved to the United States for advanced training at the University of Virginia, including a postdoctoral fellowship in neuroscience and a three-year fellowship in endovascular neurosurgery. He cares for patients with conditions such as stroke, brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, cavernous malformations, carotid artery stenosis, intracranial stenosis, and brain tumors. His goal is to provide each patient with the most effective, personalized treatment possible. Dr. Norat's research focuses on ischemic stroke, mitochondrial biology, and neuroimmunology and has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications. He also holds a U.S. patent for a novel stroke therapy.

Dr. Zhang comes to MUSC Health, and Florence, from the Upstate New York area where she has practiced a combination of Interventional Pain Medicine and Anesthesiology. She attended undergraduate training at Cornell University, and medical school at University of Michigan and Upstate Medical University. She then completed both her anesthesiology residency as well as interventional pain fellowship at the University of Rochester before returning to Ithaca, NY to join a private practice. She has over a decade of experience treating both common acute and chronic pain conditions such as low back pain, neck pain, sciatica and various joint pains and is also well versed in other more complex diagnoses such as failed laminectomy syndrome, chronic regional pain syndrome, migraines, and peripheral neuropathies. Her past patients have ranged from retirees wishing to live a more active lifestyle to college athletes with sports injuries. She treats patients with a comprehensive approach encouraging conservative modalities such as physical therapy with a focus on evidence-based interventions when such methods fail with the goal to restore function and quality of life. With clinical expertise spanning spinal, musculoskeletal, and neuropathic pain disorders, Dr. Zhang specializes in fluoroscopy-guided injections, ultrasound-guided joint interventions, radiofrequency ablation, spinal cord and peripheral nerve stimulation, minimally invasive lumbar decompression, and regenerative medicine techniques. Working together with Florence's physical therapists, surgeons, and primary care providers, Dr. Zhang ensures each patient receives an individualized treatment plan. Outside of the clinic, Dr. Zhang enjoys horseback riding, improving her newly acquired golf and tennis skills and travel. She is excited to explore her new home state of South Carolina!
