The Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolic Diseases program at MUSC Health diagnoses and treats patients with problems related to Diabetes mellitus, Graves' Eye Disease, Hypoglycemia, Thyroid disorders, Calcium-phosphorous metabolism
Osteoporosis, and Pituitary-adrenal-gonadal disorders. Complete diabetic education courses are offered. Nurses and nutritionists are integral components of this program. This program and the related practices and services provide staff and facilities for sophisticated evaluation and treatment of metabolic and endocrine disorders.

Kathie L. Hermayer, M.D. MS, is an associate professor of medicine and endocrinology in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Medical Genetics at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), Charleston, South Carolina. She is also the director for the diabetes management service and medical director of hospital diabetes services at MUSC.Dr. Hermayer completed a master's degree in biochemical nutrition at the University of Connecticut, Storrs, Connecticut. After receiving her medical degree from Albany Medical College, Albany, New York, she served an internship, a residency, and a fellowship, all at MUSC. She served a two-year national public health scholarship in primary care medicine in St. George, South Carolina from 1984 to 1986. She has been on faculty at MUSC since the completion of her endocrine fellowship in 1992.Dr. Hermayer has received grants for research on the treatment of diabetes, bone diseases and other endocrine diseases. She has written numerous articles, chapters and abstracts relating to diabetes, thyroid and other endocrine disorders.

Dr. Jyotika Fernandes is a Professor of Medicine, Department of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology at the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, SC, and the Endocrine Section Chief at the Ralph H Johnson VA Medical Center, Charleston, SC. Dr. Fernandes completed her internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, and the University of Texas, Houston, and her Endocrine fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at the Joint Baylor and M.D. Anderson program in Houston, TX.
Her clinical subspecialty is in the area of endocrine neoplasia (Thyroid, Parathyroid, Pituitary, and Adrenal) and she leads a multidisciplinary Endocrine Tumor clinic at Hollings Cancer Center that involves Head and Neck Surgery, Endocrine Surgery, Neurosurgery, Medical Oncology, and Radiation Oncology. She also represents the Endocrinology division at the tumor boards to assist in management plans for these patients. She also sees general endocrinology patients with Thyroid, Adrenal, Pituitary, Parathyroid, and Bone disorders Obesity management, and Diabetes. She is also part of the MUSC Osteoporosis Center.
Dr. Fernandes maintains a substantial clinical-translational research portfolio and has served as PI/ Co-PI on several clinical trials involving Pituitary, Thyroid tumors, and Diabetes. Her most recent research is focused on investigating the role of advanced glycation end products in cancer. Dr. Fernandes currently sees patients at Hollings Cancer Center, Charleston, and Health East Cooper Medical Pavilion, Mount Pleasant, SC. Lanie Dreyer, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, is a family nurse practitioner specializing in endocrinology at the Medical University of South Carolina. She graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in 2017 and obtained her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in 2023. With nearly seven years of experience as a registered nurse, primarily in pediatric bedside nursing, she transitioned to her current role upon completing her DNP. Employed by MUSC since 2019, she joined the Endocrinology Division in January 2024.
