Dr Askin completed his residency at Pennsylvania Hospital in internal medicine. He was employed through the Veterans Administration at the University of Pennsylvania as a hospitalist in the medical intensive care unit prior to fellowship. He completed his fellowship at Lenox Hill Hospital in 2013. He served as a hematologist and medical oncologist in Queens, NY for 10 years prior to joining the Medical University of South Carolina. He served as lab director for his practice in NY and has held multiple academic appointments.

Dr. Alisa Blumenthaler is a breast surgical oncologist and is certified by the American Board of Surgery. Her clinical interests focus on providing up-to-date, comprehensive and multi-disciplinary care for patients with breast cancer as well as high-risk and benign breast conditions. She is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at Medical University of South Carolina.
Dr. Blumenthaler is dedicated to providing compassionate care, specific to each individual patient. She works closely with MUSC's multidisciplinary breast cancer team to incorporate the latest advancements in breast cancer treatment with the goal of achieving the best cancer-related outcomes while minimizing patient side effects. She is passionate about making sure patients feel well-informed about their condition and their treatment options, in order to make a joint decision about their care. When performing a surgery to remove cancer, or another lesion in the breast, Dr. Blumenthaler also focuses on maintaining the breast's natural appearance as much as possible, including hidden-scar techniques, local breast tissue rearrangement, and performing nipple-sparing mastectomies in collaboration with MUSC's reconstructive surgeons.
Dr. Blumenthaler obtained her bachelor's degree from the University of Notre Dame, graduating with honors, prior to earning her medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. She completed her residency training in general surgery at Indiana University School of Medicine, during which she dedicated additional time to a clinical research fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Blumenthaler completed specialized training in breast surgical oncology, including breast surgery and breast cancer management, at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
Dr. Blumenthaler is a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons and the Society of Surgical Oncology. Her research interests include improving patient-physician communication and patient decision-making in breast cancer care.

Purva Sharma, M.D., FACP

Purva Sharma, MD FACP is a board-certified medical oncologist with
experience in the diagnosis, treatment and research of solid tumors and
hematologic malignancies. She previously served as an Assistant Professor of
Medicine at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, where she
was actively involved in clinical education, patient care and cancer research.
Dr. Sharma earned her medical degree from R.C.S.M. Government Medical
College in Kolhapur, India. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine
at the University of Miami-Palm Beach Regional Consortium and later
completed her fellowship in Medical Oncology at East Tennessee State
University where she also served as chief fellow. She has been nominated
for the Caduceus Award for Outstanding Fellow of the year in 2020. She is
also the recipient of the Dr. Thomas G Ronald Awardfor Excellence in the
care of the cancer patient for the year 2020-2021.
An accomplished researcher, Dr. Sharma has authored numerous peer-
reviewed publications in esteemed journals including the Lancet, British
Medical Journal and JAMA and has presented at several national medical
conferences. She has served as a site principal investigator for clinical trials.
She has also been a peer reviewer for leading medical journals, including
the New England Journal of Medicine and BMJ Case Reports. She is also a
fellow of the American College of Physicians and a fellow of the Academy of
Physicians in Clinical Research.
Dr. Sharma's professional memberships include the American Society of
Clinical Oncology, American Society of Hematology, and Society of
Hematologic Oncology. Her clinical interests include solid tumor oncology,
hematologic malignancies, cancer-related clinical research and improving
quality of care in oncology practice.
Outside of her clinical and academic work, Dr. Sharma is dedicated to
mentoring young physicians and volunteering in healthcare initiatives to
support underserved communities.
