Dane Nicholas Daley, M.D.

Dr. Dane Daley is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in hand and upper extremity surgery, peripheral nerve surgery, brachial plexus surgery, and congenital hand surgery. He has special interests in targeted muscle reinnervation for patients with painful upper and lower extremity amputations as well as patients with tetraplegia, cerebral palsy, and upper extremity and hand contractures following cerebral vascular accidents or other neurological insults. He also surgically treats the full gambit of orthopedic hand injuries and pathologies from the elbow to the fingertip. Dr. Daley enjoys managing complex upper extremity trauma at our level 1 trauma center and working alongside his orthopedic colleagues for multidisciplinary care.
Dr. Dane Daley is an assistant professor and the division chair of the orthopedic hand and microvascular surgery department at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and is joined by his 'partner in crime' Dr. Charles Daly, who is the perfect partner. Together the two cover the upper extremity from the brachial plexus to the fingertip.
Dr. Dane Daley hails from Knoxville, TN, and completed his undergraduate degree in Biology at Maryville College, where he also played football. He then matriculated from East Tennessee State University Medical School. He graduated with his orthopedic surgical residency from MUSC. He completed a prestigious fellowship at OrthoCarolina in Charlotte, NC, where his focus was on brachial plexus surgery, targeted muscle reinnervation, and congenital hand deformities, amongst all other aspects of hand surgery. During his fellowship, he spent time in Florianopolis, Brazil, with a world-renowned brachial plexus surgeon.
Dr. Dane Daley has continued to lead residents in orthopedic surgical mission work in Bonne Fin, Haiti, and this is a significant focus of his career. He has received numerous awards for research during his academic career and continues to lead orthopedic residents in the field of Hand Surgery. He is the president of the Charleston Hand Society, which entails a quarterly meeting with regional hand surgeons to review all things surrounding hand surgery. Dr. Daley desires to improve the quality of hand surgery provided to patients in the Charleston area.

M. Lance Tavana, M.D. is a board-certified plastic surgeon with additional board certification in hand surgery. Originally from Erie, Pennsylvania, Dr. Tavana attended college at Stanford University in California, where he earned a BS in biology in 2000. Medical school brought him back east to Philadelphia, where he obtained his medical degree at Temple University in 2004. Residency sent him south to the University of South Florida, where after completing his internship in general surgery, he continued his plastic surgery residency at USF, graduating in 2011. Further fellowship training in the specialty of hand and upper extremity surgery continued in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, through the Department of Orthopedics at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
Since 2012, Dr. Tavana has served as full-time faculty at the Medical University of South Carolina as an associate professor in the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He is currently the program director for the MUSC integrated plastic surgery residency and is active academically, having authored several book chapters and peer-reviewed journal articles as well as presenting on a local and national level. He previously served as the president of the South Carolina Society of Plastic Surgeons. Dr. Tavana also serves at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center, taking care of our nation's veterans.
Dr. Tavana specializes in hand and upper extremity surgery. He treats all conditions of the upper extremity from the elbow to fingertip, including but not limited to: carpal tunnel syndrome (treating with endoscopic carpal tunnel release); cubital tunnel syndrome; hand/wrist/elbow pain; rheumatoid arthritis; osteoarthritis; fractures; amputations; lacerations: tendon and nerve injuries; congenital conditions; Dupuytren's disease; tennis elbow; and, sports injuries. Dr. Tavana also performs reconstructive surgery for traumatic injuries, cancer reconstruction, and chronic wounds. Dr. Tavana currently sees patients in Mount Pleasant, West Ashley, and North Charleston.

Donna Mullner, M.D.

Dr. Donna Mullner is a hand fellowship-trained plastic and reconstructive surgeon who specializes in hand and upper extremity surgery, peripheral nerve surgery, complex limb injuries, and congenital hand surgery. She has advanced expertise in treating conditions such as hand and wrist fractures, nerve injuries and compression (including carpal tunnel and cubital tunnel syndrome), Dupuytren's disease, trigger fingers, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, and congenital differences of the hand. She takes special interests in treating tetraplegia and targeted reinnervation for patients with painful upper and lower limbs following trauma or amputation. In addition to upper extremity care, Dr. Mullner also focuses on lower extremity microsurgery, helping patients recover from trauma, tumors, and chronic wounds.
As a South Carolina native, she attended Clemson University for undergraduate education. She then completed her medical degree, general surgery internship, and plastic surgery residency at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). She completed a highly specialized fellowship in hand and upper extremity surgery at the University of Kentucky, training alongside growing leaders in tetraplegia, hand trauma, and congenital hand care. Now, as assistant professor in surgery, she returns home to South Carolina at MUSC.
Dr. Mullner has published multiple peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on upper extremity trauma, TMR and RPNI for nerve injury, and lower extremity microsurgery as well as general reconstructive plastic surgery. She has presented at numerous conferences and remains active in clinical research and resident education. She has received multiple awards for clinical teaching, surgical performance, and academic excellence. She is also deeply committed to global health, having participated in surgical mission work in Ecuador and providing reconstructive care for children with congenital and traumatic hand conditions.

Charles Andrew Daly, M.D.

Dr. Charles Daly is an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in hand, shoulder, and elbow surgery. He has a special interest in arthritis, fractures, nerve injury, tendon injury, joint replacement, and arthroscopy ("scope") of the wrist, shoulder, and elbow. His clinical interests include pathologies ranging from the fingertip to the shoulder, with special interest in innovative techniques in Dupuytren's contracture, microsurgery, complex trauma and nerve reconstruction, and minimally invasive carpal tunnel release.
Dr. Daly has published more than 100 research publications, book chapters, and presentations in the field of hand, shoulder, and elbow surgery. Some of Dr. Daly's research highlights include describing the biomechanical effects of techniques for closure following total shoulder arthroplasty and outcomes after reconstruction for complex nerve injuries. Dr. Daly has written book chapters detailing the technique for thumb carpometacarpal arthritis, medial elbow injuries in throwing athletes, peripheral nerve injuries, and served as issue editor for Hand Clinics. He currently serves on multiple committees for American Society for Surgery of the Hand, including writing questions for the annual national hand surgeon self-assessment exam.
He received an academic scholarship to attend the Calhoun Honors College at Clemson University, majoring in Genetics where he graduated magna cum laude. After graduating, he again received an academic scholarship to complete medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina where he graduated magna cum laude and as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. Dr. Daly completed his Orthopaedic Surgery Internship and Residency at Emory University, receiving multiple accolades and awards for his outstanding research and was elected as a resident leader to the esteemed American Orthopaedic Association. After the completion of his orthopaedic surgical training, Dr. Daly went on to subspecialize in hand, shoulder, and elbow surgery at the prestigious Curtis National Hand Center. During his fellowship, he again received multiple awards for research while mastering clinical elective and emergent hand, shoulder, and elbow surgery including advanced reconstructive and minimally invasive techniques.
Following his training, Dr. Daly was an assistant professor at Emory University in Atlanta, GA where he established the Upper Extremity Fellowship Program as well as served as chair of the Musculoskeletal Quality Committee. After many great years in Atlanta, he was recruited back home to Charleston, SC, to work closely with his similarly named but unrelated partner, Dr. Dane Daley, as well as to serve as medical director of musculoskeletal quality here at MUSC.

Rebecca Smith is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner working with the Orthopedic Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery Team at MUSC Health. Rebecca treats patients in the outpatient setting, treating common hand and upper extremity conditions while also preparing patients for surgery. Dr. Fernando A. Herrera Jr. obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Kansas before moving east to attend medical school at Boston University in Massachusetts. After completing his medical school education in 2003, he then moved west to California where he completed general surgery residency at the University of California, San Diego.
