Dr. Coarsey has over 30 years of experience as an OB/GYN. Originally from Georgia, he graduated from Emory University and the Medical College of Georgia, then completed his residency at Bowman Gray School of Medicine (Wake Forest) at NC Baptist Hospital. For 35 years, he practiced as a solo OBGYN in Statesville, NC, which included being the OB/GYN medical consultant at the Iredell County Health Department. He was one of four people who started a free indigent clinic in Statesville, which still continues today.
In 2016, he made a career change and became the medical director of Natural Beginnings Birth Center, supervising six nurse midwives while continuing to serve his own patients and provide care for complicated midwife patients. After the closure of his local hospital in 2022, he continues as the medical consultant for the midwifery practice in Statesville. Dr. Coarsey joined MUSC Health in June 2023.
Dr. Coarsey has a lifetime of experience dealing with high-risk pregnancy, gynecologic surgery, and infertility. He is married with three adult children and says delivering a healthy baby is the best part of any day. He believes it is important to integrate common-sense experience with modern medical tools and knowledge for the best outcomes.
